So, you know how I was sick? Well, I kept working (instead of taking my sick days like I should have) and I got really sick. Ended up with 4 days off work in total. I’m back at work now, but still not 100%

One of the advantages of working from home is that you don’t infect your co-workers while you are on the mend. I got a secondary infection in my lungs, and they are very inflamed. The infection is definitely going, but the doctor tells me it’s going to take a while for the inflamation to go down, so I’m taking things easy and trying to get used to wheezing like an asthmatic again.

On to happy things.

I’m going to be squaring, bordering and basting my quilt with my friend F. I have to wait until I’m not infectious to go and see her though, so that is on the back burner for at least another week.

I’ve been spinning.

First, I finished the orange and green sock yarn.

Then I also spun up some top from my dealer my fibre club.

Then there was the batt that also came in the package. I spun one of the batts (there were two) and plied it with white to make the colours stand out.

Funny thing is, I was trying to spin thick yarn with the last two yarns, it was thicker than I normally do, but not what I was aiming for.

All spun on my new wheel. I have a long term project going on with the Ashford.

The bowl in the last shot was a present from my MIL who recently came back from a trip to Zimbabwe. Her other gifts included (I kid you not) a 10 billion dollar note and a 100 TRILLION dollar note.

So, I haven’t been posting because the cord to my digital camera died and I needed to buy a new one. Then Gorgeous Man pointed out that he had a brand new digital camera complete with cord sitting in his wardrobe (I got the spinning wheel, he got a camera – that’s Christmas and Birthdays this year taken care of)… It didn’t even cross my mind.

In my defence, I am been sick, awful cough that is so bad I feel dizzy at the end of the coughing spell. Gorgeous Man just IMed me to let me know that my latest installment of fibre for my fibre club has arrived and is in his office and instead of going down to get it I’m waiting until he gets home (it’s a 6 minute walk or 1 minute drive). Mainly because I know I don’t have the strength to walk up the stairs to his office. Yep, must be sick

Of course this means that I have not been to the gym in ages.

Before the dreaded lurgy struck though. There was some finishing going on.

This is the second batt and the second half of the top from my fibre club (October) plied together. It’s a bit redder in real life. Reminds me of Christmas. At the rate we are going I may need to knit this up for Christmas. We have had a week of solid rain and cold, I want to know where spring is? I’ve got the heater and the open fire going.

My take-along-socks are finished.

I also finished a cardigan for the local hospital. It will have a hat and booties to match. It turned out really small though.

I do still quilt! Long time ago, before I left the quilting guild, the guild had a challenge to make miniature quilts. I took out my left-over 2 inch squares and cut some squares from Kate as well and sewed 9 patches. I then cut them and resewed to make disappearing 9 patch blocks. Then I started putting them together, and the seams didn’t quite match and since my old guild was filled with quilt police who would sniff at mismatched seams, I put the blocks deep into my stash box.

A few weeks ago I pulled them out and laid them on the floor. I realised they would be the perfect size for a doll quilt for Gorgeous Girl and she wouldn’t care about mismatched seams.

This is also my first attempt at machine quilting since the dreadful class I did a few years ago. It turned out reasonably well.

The batting was from a scrap I had lying around, and the backing and binding came from stash that I was gifted by a retiring sewer. I’m pretty sure they are poly-cotton, but it suits the purpose and Gorgeous Girl loves it, and it was free. She said “Thank you” very nicely, and takes it to bed with her each night to wrap the dollies in. I’ve got one left-over block that I’m thinking of turning into a coaster to go by my computer.

I’ve finished the last 2 rows on my fish quilt, just need to sew them on and then find fabric for the border. The pattern calls for left over fabric mitred for the border. I refuse to mitre because of the waste of fabric and the cost of fabric here. Also I don’t have enough of each kind left for that to work. So I think I’m just going to go and buy a big bit of batik blue to be the border. Hopefully I’ll have some energy by the weekend, and it will be warm enough to venture into the sewing room.

Gorgeous Man is back in the country. He arrived very late Monday night. This week has been about getting life back in order and playing with my new spinning wheel.

It came in a big box, that was opened for inspection at the airport by SARS.

That would be the South African Revenue Service. There was an import duty charged, but it was minimal (much less than we were expecting having heard the horror stories…).

Here she is.

Each Ladybug comes with her own ladybug stuck on somewhere.

Mine is at the front where I can see her. Gorgeous Girl is most taken with this feature, and looks at the “Lady beetle” several times a day.

There has been completed yarn from the new wheel.

Gorgeous Man also brought some stunning natural Blue Faced Leicester and some beautiful bamboo and merino, and merino and tussah silk top for me to to spin.

Gorgeous Girl asked to knit this week. So here she is with her first knitting ‘lesson’.

I’m hoping to have my charity cardigan finished this weekend (don’t have to work, and some travelling time in the car).

I’ve also been doing the Socktober mystery sock KAL on Ravelry. That has been great fun. I need to get a move on with that too, I’m a bit behind.

Since I can’t quilt when I’m tired, and I don’t sleep when Gorgeous Man is away, there has been no quilting for the last two weeks, slowly catching up on sleep…

Hope things are well with all of you. I’m also slowly catching up on my blog reading.

So, Gorgeous Man is currently in Portland, Maine. He left on Monday and will be back late Monday night. I’ve been telling Gorgeous Girl that Daddy will be home Tuesday since she will be asleep when he gets home. Thankfully a friend is picking him up from the airport so I don’t need to get Gorgeous Girl out of bed to sit in a carpark waiting.

I’ve been surprised at how much Gorgeous Girl has understood where Daddy has gone. I think our trip to Australia has helped somewhat since she has been on a plane and knows what one is. She was most worried that they would give Daddy food and drink on the plane, which was very sweet. She has been telling people “Daddy gone. On a plane, to ‘merica”. I explained about different countries, and later that day she asked me what T’s (the girl who watches her while I’m working) country was. I was staggered that she had absorbed the abstract information.

Life is hectic without Gorgeous Man here, and I always have chronic insomnia for the first few days that he is gone, so life has consisted of looking after Gorgeous Girl, working and collapsing exhausted on the couch at the end of the day.

There has been a little knitting and a little spinning, but no progress worth sharing at this stage.

Gorgeous Man tells me that he has my new spinning wheel in his possession, along with some assorted roving/top. The only one he would tell me about was the 16 ounces (453 grams) of Blue Faced Leicester. He says I have to have some surprises…

Well, Gorgeous Girl is sleeping and I have the day off, so I’m going to try ad catch up on my very long list of blogs I haven’t visited for a while.

Life has been hectic, and a certain little miss seems to need more and more entertaining lately. Still I’ve managed to get a bit finished here and there.

First up, some spinning. This is my attempt at sock yarn. It is 3.35 ounces and 341 yards (95 grams and 312 metres) and is n-plied.

I need to spin up the second half for the second sock.

Recently I spun my first batt.

I enjoyed it so much that I’ve joined a local (South African) monthly fibre club to receive batts and fibre in the mail for three months. Ravelry is a wonderful thing.

Gorgeous Man is heading to Portland, Maine in just a few days time, and I wanted him to have something hand knit to keep him warm.

The maroon is handspun and the grey is commercial yarn held double. If I was to do it again I’d leave off the bottom stripes and do them at the top. The pattern is Turn a Square by Jared Flood. (Ravelry link).

On Sunday I had a birthday that now puts me closer to 40 than thirty I had a lovely day even though I worked. Gorgeous Girl’s birthday is exactly a week before mine, and so she now thinks that birthdays happen often. Unfortunately for her this is a September/October birthday house and she has a long time to wait for the next one.

I think she liked it.

OK time to be truthful. It tasted really good, and even better today, but Gorgeous Girl isn’t much of a cake eater and was happy to just have the Smarties off the top (she doesn’t get lollies very often).

She was thrilled with her birthday presents though. I have to show you this picture, because it says volumes about her.

We had to put the paper waste basket there for her to put the rubbish into straight away. She didn’t seem to mind the paper that came off in one big piece, but the little torn bits had to go straight into the bin.

Gorgeous Girl is a child of diverse tastes.

She was stoked by the tractor puzzle book. A little later (I think this is my favourite picture for the day)…

A new baby and a stroller.

The stroller was a present from my Mum. We will not discuss how freaking hard it was to find a black doll in South Africa!

One final present finished after she went to bed.

Luckily it was cold this morning

I’ve been having great fun with my new ball winder. My handspun looks totally professional all balled up, well at least I think it does.

I was sorting out my scrap (shoe)box this week (thanks to a certain Gorgeous Girl who decided to help Mummy by emptying it on the floor) and discovered a UFO that I had become discouraged about a little while ago. I decided to finish it anyway and give it to Gorgeous Girl as a doll quilt. She is currently very into looking after her ‘babies’.

This was disappearing nine-patch made from scraps left over from my first quilt. Just got the binding to cut, sew and put on. This is the first machine quilting I’ve attempted since my disasterous class last year. I’m kind of pleased with how it turned out, though it could be better. The backing and the batting came from stash, so that was nice to use it up.

I’ve added another row to the fish quilt.

It’s starting to move across the bottom of the quilt now only 5 more rows to go and they get progressively shorter. I’ve got the sewing machine permanently set up and am sneaking in a few minutes here and there as I get a spare moment and that is really helping it to come along. Then borders and hand quilting.

I’ve nearly finished a jumper (sweater) for Gorgeous Girl – big reveal when it’s done. The cardigan for me is also coming along nicely. I’m a little concerned about the fit, but it hasn’t been blocked yet, and I am also shrinking, so it should be fine.

I really must get out and take a picture of the vegetable garden, now that the seeds are big enough to be seen. Pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, carrots, beetroot, lettuce and spinach are all up. It’s going to be great.

I went to my craft group, the Free Radicals, yesterday. This month it was my turn to receive quilt blocks. There are still a few to come in, but these are the blocks I received.

Pretty. I gave each person a fish square to use either as inspiration or in the block. Once I receive the rest of the blocks I’ll know how many I need to make to turn it inot a useful sized quilt.

I managed to add another row to the fish quilt today. It’s coming together slowly but surely.

I had to stop cutting for row 11 after I cut two strips the wrong size, and I’m on limited fabric since I’m using stuff I bought in the USA and can’t get more if I run out. Serve me right for continuing to cut fabric once Gorgeous Girl was awake… I’ve cleared up the craft room enough that the sewing machine is permanently out. That makes a big difference to sneaking 5 or 10 minutes of piecing here and there.

It seems like spring has finally arrived after weeks of rain. Today these little critters were in the backyard.

These are grass cutting termites, the literally cut the grass around your house and drag it into their nests. They are different from the ones that attack your houses. Here, the females are flying off to start new colonies. It was pretty interesting, and of course there were lots of birds around feasting, but they all flew away when I got my camera…

Our little garden is starting to grow as well now that the weather is a bit warmer. The corn is up, so is the swiss chard and the lettuce, but the tomatoes have been disappointing. We’re going to give it a week or so and then replant the tomato seeds, it may have just been too cold and wet when we planted the first time.

On Friday last week my very talented friend from Nurturing Fibres was in the area and called in to drop off a ball winder that she was kindly selling to me. She also brought along some rovings that she and some other local artisans have dyed, so that I could have a look, seeing as I’ve never seen anything (except the alpaca that she sold me last year) that other people have put together. Oh, so pretty! Once my finances recover from my spinning wheel purchase I’m going to be haunting her Etsy store Go and check it out. I’m so excited that there seems to be more spinning stuff available locally than when I started last year. Not that I (ahem) need more stash. Must knit faster.

I’m so thankful that she called in, as she worked some magic on my spinning wheel and it spins like butter again. I don’t have a manual and so had forgotten some of the tips that I was given in my 30 minute lesson when I bought it. Tonight is Tuesday for spinning and I’m looking forward to spinning like a mad thing once my shift finishes at 9 tonight.

Not much other news, Gorgeous Man has been sick with the flu, and Gorgeous Girl has a runny nose. So that has kept me busier than usual. Can you believe that she turns 2 in 12 days time! Where has the time gone?

I’ve been a bit ill. A mild cold and then (as they so charmingly say here) I was afflicted with a ‘runny tummy.’ The lovely doctor gave me antibiotics and probiotics and I’m feeling much better. Still not 100% though. So I haven’t had much energy for blogging, when you work online and you are struggling to get through your shift blogging sometimes seems like more work instead of the fun that it is meant to be. Seems as if just when I’m getting into a rhythm for blogging life throws me a curve ball.

There was considerable interest in the worm farm so here are a few pictures and some more details.

This is our farm.We keep it in a corner of our garage.

The shears are tilting it backwards beause the tap at the bottom was dripping. The worms are in the top level and the juice drips down to the bottom where we collect it from the tap. At the moment the second level is empty, but once the top gets a bit fuller we will switch them around and start putting food in the empty one (which will now be on top) the worms will follow the food and migrate up and we will have the castings to put on the garden.

Speaking of the garden, the first of the seeds are up! Photos when they are big enough to actually show up in a picture.

This is what worm juice (or worm pee) looks like.

It is the result of moisture running through the castings. This is diluted 10 to 1 and is poured directly onto plants. It is awesome stuff. I’m hoping for a little more. Will try and collect some on Friday.

On the crafting front, I just finished another block for my block swap. The points police would not like this one… Only three more to go! I’ll be glad when this is out of the way. I stress to much about my level of skill. The other ladies in the group have many more years of quilting experience and a much higher level of skill than I do. Also since I can only sew while Gorgeous Girl is sleeping – we are having a clingy Mummy Mummy stage at the moment, it eats into my own sewing time.

Bizarrely, Gorgeous Girl will let me spin. In fact today she tried to drag me to the spinning wheel saying “Wool Wool” (as an aside, I love the fact that she can tell you that W is for Wool). Unfortunately I had to decline her offer to spin since I was working.

I’ve nearly finished a jumper (sweater) for Gorgeous Girl and the back of the handspun cardigan for me is finished.

I’m going to leave you with hard evidence that I am shrinking.

Old pants on the bottom, new skirt on the top. Old pants were a size 44, new skirt is a size 38 The skirt was an absolute bargain. It was reduced from Rand 225 to R84! The zipper is installed a bid dodgily, but for R84 I can live with that. It’s warm and comfortable.

Pictures of WIPs next post.

I’ll try not to stay away so long this time. Since I know you are all hanging out for my posts lol.
