We had our 13 week scan today, and the offspring appears to be developing normally and healthily. We went to a specialist in Cape Town as she does the nuchal folds test for Downs Syndrome as well, they also took some blood, but at this stage it looks good, we get the blood results back on Wednesday.
She had a state-of-the art machine. We got to see the hemispheres of the brain, and the offspring was really active, waving and kicking and stretching. We also got to see the blood pumping through the heart and hear the heart beating.
It’s got to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen, not just because it’s ours, but the sheer technology of it.
Towards the end of the scan I realised that I had been holding my breath for most of the scan waiting for her to say that everything was ok. After that I got to enjoy it.
We got the thing recorded on dvd for posterity (all 14 minutes of it). We are going to a pancake evening tonight with friends and I’m trying to decide whether or not to inflict first baby dvd on them. Maybe I’ll just settle with the scan print-outs.
Doctor now knows what we are having, but we don’t. She said we could have been able to tell too, if we’d been paying attention, but we went and looked at the tape (disc?) and can’t tell (I think it’s something you need lots of practice for). It’s ok. We want to be surprised.
I’ll post a picture of the scan once we get it scanned into Gorgeous Man’s computer.
And the due date is coming closer to my calculations. We’re now looking at October 7. Though with my birthday falling on the 11th of October, Gorgeous Man is convinced that I’ll be getting a birthday present…
No new knitting to show as I’m still plugging away at the scarf and showing an inch or so more each time is kind of boring.
Fat Boy thanks you all for your well wishes. He is putting a little more weight onto his leg and jumped onto the couch to sleep last night, so we are making some small improvements. Mostly though he overdoes it and then spends hours hiding in his spot between the couch and the wall feeling sorry for himself.
So very glad to hear all looks good! I held my breath during the scans of mine, each time. How exciting to be surprised by the gender!
You are right, the technology today is mind-boggling. It’s wonderful to hear that everything is going the way it’s supposed to.
That’s really great news, so glad everything is moving along nicely. How cool to see that scan – I must have been so surreal.
I guess I must be really behind on my blog reading. I didn’t know!
Congratulations Ruth! Wonderful news! Glad to hear everything is going well.
How exciting! I could never make heads or tails out of the scans. I guess when you do them all the time you know what to look for.
i’m so happy for you that everything is going well with the pregnancy. And you must share your progress with others (whether it be on DVD or photos) as it’s something special. Please keep us posted as i am eager to know how you are doing with the pregnancy.
I’m glad all is progressing well with the pregnancy. I couldn’t tell from looking at the scan what I was having either. I could hardly tell it was a baby!! I guess you have to know what you are looking for.
Work on your dates, there’s vary a/c to how big the baby is that day etc. They must be good to know the sex at 13 weeks, any bits would be very small. 2 of my girlfriends in the last year were told wrong so I wouldn’t put money on it! Great to see that heart beat though! LOL tracey
it is wonderful when everything is alrigth.
I never understand any of mine’s also, doctor would say this is the hand and look at the fingers and there is the face look at the eyes, they were there alrigth.
